Ten Questions: Oak Harbor's Jay Turner

0 Ratings / 0 Comments

Oak Harbor High School's head football coach, Jay Turner, has been with the program for twelve years but it'll be his first season as head coach.  Coach Turner teaches AP Calculus and Algebra II.  He played football and basketball at Marysville Pillchuck High School and played college football at the University of Montana.  Last season, the Wildcats (11-1) made it to the second round of the 4A Championships.

1."How long have you been coaching?"
"I have been coaching football for 12 years.  I have also coached JV boys basketball (1 year) and track (6 years)."

2."What is your favorite part about coaching?"
"The best part about coaching is working with the kids outside of the classroom.  You get to learn so much more about the kids when you coach."

3."What players or teams (offense, defense, special teams) are you expecting big things from this season?
"We will definitely be a young team this year.  We will have quite a few juniors and sophmores playing varsity.  We only have a couple of starters coming back from last season.  We hope that we get 'big things' from all parts of the team."

4."Who, or what, do you see as your main competition next season?"
"I think the league (Wesco North) will be very competitve this year.  Everyone in the league has a chance to make the playoffs."

5."What has been your most defining moment as a head football coach?"
"Getting hired.  This is my first year as the head coach so I don't have a lot of defining moments yet."

6."What was the most rewarding event of last season?"
"Probably two things.  One being that we went undefeated during the regular season and the second is that we opened our new stadium with a shutout victory."

7."What is the hardest part of coaching?"
"The time away from my family.  I have two young kids and a very understanding wife who I wish I could spend more time with."

8."Who do you consider to be your role model?"
"I have a few role models.  My dad would be the one who has been the role model my who life but also my high school football coach Scott Stokes and basketball coach Mike Lowery."

9."What is your favorite hobby outside of sports?"  "
I like to play video games.  We have a Nintendo Wii that I enjoy playing with my kids."

10."Do you have a pre-game routine, and if so, what is it?"
"Myself and a couple of other coaches always go out and eat before each game.  As long as we are winning we don't change where we go but once we lose a game then we change up restaurants."

Bonus question: "What do you want your players to walk away from your program with?"
"Hopefully a lot of things.  We want our athletes to be good students, citizens, and respectful young adults.  I hope they have a love for the game of football and that they don't regret anything."
